The Sunshine Legal Clinic`s mission is to improve access to legal services for people in and around Sun Prairie who otherwise could not afford them. In addition to assisting with client interviews and registrations, students are paired with volunteer lawyers to provide 15- to 30-minute consultations for individuals seeking advice on family law, debt collection, tenant rights, immigration, criminal law, small claims, employment, and more. Legal Action`s Madison Bankruptcy Clinic offers free case evaluation and counselling to low-income clients in a limited Chapter 7 clinic staffed by a pro bono lawyer as part of our pro bono lawyer project. Appointments can be made in person or by phone. Student volunteers assist the volunteer lawyer with notes and other tasks requested by the lawyer. To do this, CASA trains, supports and supervises community volunteers who advocate on behalf of these children in the community and in court, with the goal of placing them in safe and permanent homes as quickly as possible. The Family Legal Advocacy and Supports Clinic (“FLASC”) uses a multidisciplinary approach to support families at risk of participating in the child welfare system. FLASC is a partnership between the Department of Children and Families, the School of Law and the UW School of Social Work. District social workers refer people who would benefit from preventive legal advocacy. Law students then work with social work students to provide a variety of support services, including providing legal information, forms and advice to self-represented litigants on family law matters; direct representation in family law matters; and referrals for matters other than family law. We select candidates with a connection to Wisconsin who would otherwise receive little qualified legal advice. This generally means that the applicant has not received significant debt financing or financing from investors. We are also interested in knowing if the desired work is an interesting educational opportunity for our students.
The Law and Entrepreneurship (L&E) clinic offers free legal services to budding entrepreneurs and start-ups through the work of law students mentored by professors and private lawyers. Students engage in the traditional practice of litigation and use skills such as fact-finding, legal research, analysis, drafting, negotiation, consulting, and litigation. Students also learn to participate and consider less traditional advocacy activities, such as public speaking, writing educational materials, and participating in local campaigns for social and economic justice. The Pro Bono Program (formerly the University of Wisconsin School of Law`s Pro Bono Partnership Project) began as a pilot project in 2007. Its basic structure was to pair law students with local Dane County lawyers to provide civil legal assistance to individuals who would otherwise not be able to provide legal representation. These guidelines for the UW pro bono program are drawn from ABA Model Rule 6.1. Improving Legal Education through Community Engagement LIFT Dane (Legal Interventions for Transforming Dane) is a partnership between the Economic Justice Institute, Legal Action of Wisconsin, UW School of Law Civil Clinics, including the Center for Patient Partnerships, and the Employment and Training Association to create an online platform that provides easy online access to public data and services. FCC students provide legal information, forms and advice to self-represented litigants under the supervision of experienced clinical schools. FCC students deepen their legal education by providing comprehensive representation in certain measures of family law. Through direct service to the community, students gain effective legal skills while developing an understanding of the social and economic contexts in which litigants` problems arise, as well as the opportunities and limitations of the legal system.
The Economic Justice Institute also has an additional clinic that provides direct legal services to victims/survivors of intimate partners and/or domestic violence. Veteran`s Law Center (VLC) is a free legal center staffed by volunteer lawyers, paralegals and law students from the Dane County Bar Association. It is offered by DCBA Legal Clinics, which also house the Family Law Assistance Centre (FLAC) and the Small Claims Assistance Program (SCAP). VLC serves low-income veterans and their families, providing brief legal advice, information and recommendations on a variety of civil law issues. In keeping with the law school`s law in action tradition, students develop legal and professional skills, gain hands-on experience in real-world work environments, and explore their ethical responsibility to provide pro bono service. Students at the Consumer Law Clinic examine how the legal system creates and perpetuates economic injustice. Specifically, students: The free legal clinic is held every first Thursday of the month from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at 1632 Main Street West, Sun Prairie.
LIFT Dane will first help people get their suspended driver`s license back, help people identify other legal issues they may have, and refer them to other legal services and employment supports. Students help test the app, which is being developed to streamline legal services. Over time, technology and pop-ups will solve several legal problems. In addition to pop-ups, the technology will be available to all stakeholders in Dane County – self-represented individuals, lawyers (and law students) in community clinics and businesses, and community representatives. Students are mentored by clinical faculty from the Center for Patient Partnerships and the Neighborhood Law Clinic, as well as advocates from community partner organizations. The Family Court Clinic (FCC) is a program of the University of Wisconsin School of Law. Law students (supervised by a clinical law professor) work with you free of charge. FCC provides full representation in some cases and provides assistance to unrepresented individuals with simple family law issues in Wisconsin.
People who contact us directly for help will not be fully represented. On the contrary, full representation is only given in a few cases that are referred to us by other bodies. Clinical law students occupy the community office in the UW South Madison Partnership space on Villager Mall on the south side of Madison. Students deal with individual cases and, where appropriate, engage in community-led education and advocacy.
