The following courses are conducted in either a “synchronous” live virtual format or a hybrid residential/virtual format. Vermont Law School`s summer session includes more than 60 courses in environmental law, restorative justice, energy regulation, food and agriculture law, and more. In order to participate in our JD-Only courses, students must pursue a JD at another institution and have a good reputation. JD-Only residential courses will be personal for the duration of the summer semester: 5/31-8/4. Introduction to legal research tools and strategies relevant to both law school and legal practice. Topics include legal authority, the use of primary and secondary sources, the effective use of LexisNexis, Westlaw and other electronic databases, the role of the Internet in legal research, and a brief introduction to international environmental and legal research. Emphasis is placed on appropriate and effective research strategies and evaluation of sources, both print and electronic. JD-Only online courses are asynchronous courses with no specific meeting hours during the week. There are 14-week online courses for a full semester and an online term 2, a 7-week online course. This one-credit course provides an in-depth examination of the most useful and effective strategies and resources for environmental law research, including specialized scientific and statistical information resources, governmental, national and international research in environmental law, advanced research in administrative law, legislative history, environmental update services, etc. The course is designed to prepare students to explore environmental law and non-legal documents for use in law schools and practice. The most frequently asked questions about the VLS summer session Ecology is an integrative science that can provide insight into many contemporary environmental issues. Through visits to various field sites in central Vermont, readings and lectures, this course will explore the principles of ecology with a practical and interdisciplinary approach.
Corporations and Other Trade Associations Provides a basic understanding of the various forms of organization for businesses, including corporations, limited liability companies and partnerships, partnerships, and sole proprietorships. The course also explores agency law, examining selected topics such as basic accounting principles, business formation, financing, dissolution and securities regulation. This course will examine historical and policy considerations related to the regulation and enforcement of cannabis, examine current and projected regulatory landscapes, and incorporate considerations relevant to practitioners in this rapidly evolving field. Vsell Practicum. Prerequisite: BUS6218. Registration by Application Includes procedural rules for civil actions in state and federal courts, from initiation to appeal, including jurisdiction over parties, combination of parties and claims, content of briefs, pre-litigation motions and discoveries, conduct of proceedings, post-litigation motions, res judicata, collateral forfeiture and conflicts between state and federal judicial systems. At the end of the course on Environmental Policy in Developing Countries, students are invited to participate in an optional excursion depending on the level of travel restrictions, where they can take a first-hand look at how developing countries use the law to address environmental challenges. Prerequisite: Environmental policy in developing countries. A basic introduction to patent, copyright, trademark and trade secret law. Mainly includes Article 2 of the Uniform Commercial Code, which governs the sale of goods, including the conclusion and amendment of sales contracts, the limitation period for fraud in Article 2, warranties, proof of probation, allocation of risk in the storage or transportation of goods, violations, remedies for sellers and buyers, and contractual limitations on remedies.
The course includes references to consumer rights as well as comparisons between contractual common law and the rules and concepts of the code. Students complete three semesters of legal writing at VLS. During their first semester, students learn the fundamentals of legal writing by third-year Dean`s Fellows, who work under the supervision of the program`s director and associate director. Students learn the ABCs of legal writing – accuracy, brevity and clarity – through a series of typical task exercises for summer staff and new lawyers. Students will also be introduced to the latest legal research tools by the Julien and Virginia Cornell Library Research Librarians staff.
